Venue Description
The Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, home to the Sunrisers Hyderabad, was built after the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) faced limited access to the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium, which was owned by the Sports Authority of Telangana State. The older stadium was also deemed too small to host international matches.
The proposal to construct a new stadium was swiftly approved by the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N. Chandrababu Naidu. An auction was held to determine the ownership of the ground, which was won by Visaka Industries Ltd for Rs. 65 crore. Initially named after the company, the stadium was later renamed in memory of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi by then Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.
The stadium hosted its first match in 2005, a clash between India and South Africa. Since then, it has been a mixed bag for the Indian team in ODIs, with three losses out of five matches. However, India has enjoyed more success in Test cricket, winning two out of three games played here.
Pitch Characteristics
The pitch at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium is generally considered a flat track, favoring batsmen early on. However, as the game progresses, the surface tends to slow down, bringing spinners into play. This characteristic has been evident in both ODIs and Tests, with spinners often playing a decisive role.
Notable performances at the venue include Sachin Tendulkar’s iconic 175 in a high-scoring ODI against Australia, where India nearly chased down 350. In Tests, India has secured innings victories against New Zealand and Australia, with spinners dominating the proceedings.
