Introduction
The Narendra Modi Stadium, popularly known as the Motera Stadium, is one of India’s premier cricket grounds. Owned by the Gujarat Cricket Association, it falls under the jurisdiction of the West Zone. The stadium is often referred to as the Motera Stadium to distinguish it from another venue of the same name in the Navrangpura area of Ahmedabad.
Venue History
Before the construction of the Motera Stadium, international matches were held at the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s stadium, which also bore the name Sardar Patel Stadium. In 1982, the Gujarat government donated a 50-acre plot of land on the banks of the Sabarmati River for the construction of the Motera Stadium. Remarkably, the stadium was built in just nine months. The first international match hosted here was a Test between India and the West Indies on November 12, 1983.

Venue Description
The Motera Stadium has witnessed numerous historic moments in cricket. It is also the adopted home ground for the Indian Premier League franchise Rajasthan Royals. The stadium features several stands, including the GMDC Upper and Lower stands, East Upper and Lower Pavilion, Adani Lower Pavilion, Adani Upper Pavilion, Club Pavilion, and West Pavilion. Most stands have two tiers, except for the Club and West Pavilions. The Adani Pavilion includes over 20 air-conditioned corporate boxes and houses the player dressing rooms. The stadium boasts 21 entry gates.
In 2006, the stadium underwent significant renovations ahead of the Champions Trophy. The upgrades included state-of-the-art floodlights, covered stands, three new pitches, and a revamped outfield.
How Does the Pitch Play?
The pitch at the Motera Stadium is generally slow. While it was initially known to assist bowlers, it has lost some of its pace over the years, making it more favorable for batsmen. Test matches at this venue often tend to be high-scoring affairs, with very few games reaching a decisive result.

- Sunil Gavaskar became the first cricketer to score 10,000 Test runs on this ground, achieving the milestone against Pakistan in 1986-87.
- Kapil Dev broke Sir Richard Hadlee’s record to become the highest wicket-taker in Test cricket here, claiming his 432nd wicket in 1993.
