France has a long and storied history in the FIFA World Cup, having won the tournament on two occasions and reaching the final on three other occasions.
The French national team first participated in the FIFA World Cup in 1930, reaching the semi-finals before losing to eventual champions Uruguay. France returned to the World Cup in 1934 and 1938, but was unable to progress beyond the quarter-final stage on either occasion.
It was not until 1954 that France finally tasted success at the World Cup, defeating Brazil 2-1 in the final to lift the trophy for the first time. The French team of 1958 is often considered one of the greatest sides in World Cup history, reaching the final once again where they narrowly lost out to Brazil.
After a period of decline, France regained its place as a footballing powerhouse in 1984 when they reached the European Championship final, only to lose out on penalties to Denmark. Two years later, France qualified for their first ever FIFA World Cup finals, hosted by Mexico. Les Bleus progressed all the way to the semi-finals before being beaten on penalties by West Germany.
In 1998, France hosted and won their first ever FIFA World Cup, defeating Brazil 3-0 in the final at the Stade de France. The victory made them only the seventh nation to win multiple World Cups. Four years later, France were back at it again as they defeated Italy in another close final, becoming world champions for a second time.
The Two Teams’ Current Form
France come into this game on the back of a 2-1 win against Argentina in the Round of 16. Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe were on the scoresheet for Les Bleus, with Lionel Messi getting a consolation goal for the Albiceleste. The FIFA World Cup will be the 22nd edition of the England vs France 4th Quarter Final FIFA World Cup, and is scheduled to take place in Qatar from 21 November to 18 December 2022.
