Venue Description

Eden Gardens, located in Kolkata, is one of the most iconic cricket stadiums in the world. Known as “Cricket’s answer to the Colosseum,” it holds a special place in the history of Indian cricket. With a seating capacity of over 66,000 after renovations before the 2011 World Cup, it remains the largest cricket stadium in India.

The stadium has witnessed numerous historic moments, including the first World Cup final outside Lord’s. Anil Kumble’s remarkable figures of 6/12 against West Indies in the 1993 Hero Cup final and VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid’s legendary 376-run partnership against Australia in the 2001 Test series are etched in its legacy. Rohit Sharma’s record-breaking 264 in an ODI against Sri Lanka in 2014 also took place here.

However, the venue has also seen its share of controversies. The infamous crowd disturbance during the 1996 World Cup semi-final between India and Sri Lanka, and the mob fury during the Asian Test Championship match against Pakistan in 1999, are reminders of the passionate, sometimes volatile, nature of Kolkata’s cricket fans.

Eden Gardens hosted its first Test match in 1934, when India faced England, and its first ODI in 1987, against Pakistan. Until 1984, the stadium also served as a football venue, hosting several prominent derbies.
